Pastelitos de Guayaba y Queso (Guava & Cheese Pastries)

These Cuban pastries are filled with guava and cheese. They're great with a cup of coffee or as a dessert after a meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry
  • 8 ounces guava paste
  • 8 ounces cream cheese

Simple Syrup

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Thaw the puff pastry according to packaging instructions
  • Add the water and sugar to a sauce pan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves
  • Remove the water and sugar mixture from the heat and let it cool completely
  • Unfold each sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out so its about an inch bigger
  • Cut each pastry sheet into 4 squares, place a slice of guava paste and cream cheese in the center of each square
  • Brush the edges with the egg wash and seal it in a triangle shape
  • Place the triangles on a lined baking sheet, brush the tops with the egg wash and make a slit in the center so the steam can release
  • Bake the triangles for 25 minutes
  • Brush them with the simple syrup and enjoy
