These crispy onion rings are sliced thin, perfectly seasoned, and fried to perfection. No beer, milk, or buttermilk is required!
If you enjoyed these French fried onions, then you’ll certainly love these ones! Homemade onion rings are so much better than restaurant ones because you can slice them however you want. If you like them thick, then slice them thick, if you like them thin like I do, slice them thin! Serve these with spicy aioli, for the ultimate appetizer!
Why You’ll Love These Crispy Onion Rings
- They’re sweet, savory, and perfectly crunchy.
- They fry in just 2 minutes.
- Requires minimal ingredients.
- You can serve them with ketchup, ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, or by themselves!
- Super easy to make.
Ingredient Notes
- Onions – I like to use Vidalia onion whenever I make crispy onion rings but feel free to use red or yellow onions. Vidalia onions are sweet and mild and very sturdy!
- Eggs – Will help the bread crumbs adhere to the onions.
- Bread Crumbs – I used a combination of regular breadcrumbs and panko bread crumbs. Panko adds a good amount of crunch. However, feel free to use only one type of bread crumbs if you don’t have both on hand.
- Oil – Use any type of oil with a high smoking point such as vegetable, canola, or peanut oil. Avoid olive oil for frying.
Step-By-Step Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them crosswise into thin slices. Separate the slices to create rings.
- Combine the garlic powder, baking powder, 1 tsp salt, and flour. Mix until well combined. In a separate dish, whisk 3 eggs.
- In a separate dish, combine the panko bread crumbs, plain bread crumbs, and 1 tsp salt. Mix well.
- Heat about 4 inches of oil to 360 degrees F. Use a thermometer for best results.
- Coat each onion ring in the flour mixture, then dip them in the egg mixture, and then coat them in the bread crumb mixture.
- Fry the onion rings, about 5-6 at a time. Fry for 1 minute on each side then drain on paper towels.
Top Tips
- If you slice the onions thin like I did they will cook very quickly. If you prefer them thicker, they may take a couple of extra minutes to cook.
- Make sure to pack on the bread crumbs!
What Can I Serve These With?
Although I typically serve these as an appetizer, you can serve these with a cheeseburger or turkey bacon avocado sandwich.
Can I Bake These Instead?
Absolutely, preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Place the onion rings after you coat them in the bread crumb mixture on a lined baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes.
Storage
If you have any leftovers feel free to place them in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days but keep in mind that they will get soggy. I highly recommend enjoying them immediately.
