Fried fish sandwiches make a great meal for busy weeknights. Perfectly seasoned crispy cod served on brioche buns with all the fixings.

Serve these with French fries and creamy coleslaw for the ultimate lunch or dinner.

What Kind Of Fish Should I Use?

I highly recommend using cod, haddock, or halibut. Although any white-fleshed meaty fish will work for this recipe.

What You Need To Make Fried Fish Sandwiches

ingredients to make fried fish sandwiches, spices, egg, flour, cornmeal, cod, buttermilk, hot sauce, and baking powder.
    • Fish – I used 1 lb of cod and sliced it into 4 pieces.
    • Buttermilk – If you don’t have buttermilk, feel free to use whole milk instead. Although you can make your own buttermilk at home by simply mixing 1 tbsp of vinegar and 1 cup of whole milk.
    • Cornmeal – this will add a bit of crunch and extra flavor to the fried fish.
    • Spices – Although you can season the fish with just salt and pepper I strongly recommend using old bay seasoning and some other spices to add flavor.

    How To Make

    1. Begin by seasoning the fish on both sides. In a small bowl, mix the buttermilk, hot sauce, and egg. In a separate dish, mix the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and leftover spices.
    2. Dip the fish in the buttermilk mixture shaking off any excess buttermilk and then coat it in the flour mixture. Make sure to coat the fish really well. Coat the fish 2-3 times in the flour/cornmeal mixture.
    3. Fry the fish in peanut oil or vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side. The oil temperature should be between 350 and 375 degrees F.
    4. Let the fish rest on a wire rack for 3-4 minutes before serving.

    Toppings

    • Tartar Sauce
    • Lettuce
    • Tomatoes
    • Pickles
    • Jalapenos
    • Cheese

Top Tips For The Ultimate Fried Fish Sandwiches

    • Have all of your toppings ready to go before frying the fish.
    • If you’re not a fan of tartar sauce use remoulade sauce or mayo instead.
    • Serve with fresh lemon wedges.

    Can I Use Frozen Fish?

Yes, just make sure to fully thaw the fish before using. Also make sure to let the fish sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before frying.

How To Tell That The Fish Is Fully Cooked Through?

The fish will no longer be translucent when it’s fully cooked. It should be flaky and tender. Make sure not to overcook the fish. It should take about 5-6 minutes total.
