Make this guacamole for lunch or dinner and serve it with warm tortilla chips. You can also serve it over carne asada tacos or chorizo tacos!

Guacamole in a molcajete topped with limes, tomatoes, jalapenos, and chips.

Guacamole is an avocado-based dip first developed in Mexico. You can enjoy it as a dip, spread, topping, or condiment. It’s fresh, delicious, and super easy to make! This crab guacamole is another family favorite.

Why You’ll Love This Guacamole Recipe

    • Avocados are high in fat but they are a great source of potassium, high in fiber, and rich in vitamin B, E, and K. So yes, guacamole can be very healthy.
    • No cooking involved!
    • The perfect recipe to make when your avocados are about to go bad.
    • You can easily double or triple this recipe if you’re feeding a large crowd.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Avocados – You will need two ripe avocados. Hold the avocado in the palm of your hand and squeeze it gently, it should be firm and a little soft. Avoid avocados that are mushy or hard.
    • Onions – Red, yellow, or white onions work, just make sure to finely dice them.
    • Limes – It enhances the flavor and allows less salt to be used.
    • Cilantro – A little bit of chopped fresh cilantro will give your guacamole a very fresh flavor.
    • Salt – Avocados are bland so make sure to season the guacamole generously with lots of salt.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

    1. Scoop the avocado flesh into a molcajete or medium bowl. Add the lime and salt and mash with a fork until it reaches your desired consistency.
    2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Check for seasoning and add more lime or salt if needed. Serve immediately and enjoy.

    Top Tips

    • Guacamole is best when you serve it immediately but if you need to make it ahead of time, place the avocado pits in the guacamole and lay a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent it from browning.
    • I prefer a chunkier texture but if you like it smooth, mash it for a few extra seconds. If serving a large crowd, I recommend serving it chunky. If they like it smoother they can always mash it themselves.
    • Like it extra spicy? Use serrano peppers instead of jalapenos.
    • Traditional guacamole is made with very few ingredients but feel free to include diced tomatoes, roasted corn, pumpkin seeds, crab, or cotija cheese.

    Storage

Transfer any leftovers into a bowl and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Always enjoy guacamole cold or at room temperature, it shouldn’t be served hot.
