This stuffed french toast recipe is made with challah bread, egg custard, and berries. Serve it with butter, maple syrup, and powdered sugar for breakfast or brunch!

Why You’ll Love These Stuffed French Toast

    • It’s a cool spin on traditional french toast so if you’re looking to impress your guests, you need to make them this!
    • Super easy to make.
    • Cooks in under 10 minutes.
    • The cream cheese filling isn’t overly sweet.
    • It has buttery caramelized edges.
    • Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Bread – I highly recommend using thick slices of slightly stale challah bread. The bread should be on the dry side in order to soak in the custard. If using sandwich bread, use two slices of bread and prepare it like a sandwich. Spread a layer of cream cheese filling on one side of the bread and top with the second slice of bread.
    • Milk – Whole milk is what I used but feel free to use whatever type of milk you have on hand.
    • Cream Cheese – softened at room temperature.
    • Berries – I used a combination of blueberries and raspberries but feel free to use strawberries or peaches instead. You can also omit the berries altogether and only use cream cheese and sugar.
    • Cinnamon – Adds amazing flavor!

    Step-By-Step Instructions

    1. In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sugar. Mix well and then fold in the blueberries and raspberries.
    2. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Mix until well combined.
    3. Using a serrated knife, cut a horizontal slit on the crust of each slice of bread stopping just before you reach the opposite crust. This will create a pocket for the filling.
    4. Spoon about 2 tbsp of the cream cheese mixture into each slice of bread.
    5. Add some butter to a skillet and once it melts, dip the bread in the egg mixture on both sides and then place the bread in the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes over medium heat.
    6. Serve immediately with butter and syrup.

    Top Tips

    • For best results use fresh ingredients except for the bread, the bread should be slightly stale.
    • Make sure the cream cheese is softened at room temperature.
    • If you’re serving these stuffed french toast with syrup, I recommend using a small amount of cream cheese for each slice of bread otherwise it will be too sweet. A little bit goes a long way!
    • Use a nonstick skillet.
    • Don’t leave the bread in the custard for too long, 3-4 seconds per side is plenty.

Can I Cook This In The Air Fryer?

Absolutely! Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F. and spray the basket with cooking spray. Place the stuffed french toast in the air fryer basket and cook for 5 minutes then flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Time may vary depending on the air fryer model.
