My mom makes the best stuffing every Thanksgiving, although this year this stuffing recipe will be making an appearance at the dinner table. I don’t know about you but I prefer stuffing as a side dish rather than stuffed in a turkey. This maple sausage stuffing is incredibly delicious and easy to make but if you’re not a fan of sausage feel free to use beef or ground turkey.

What is Stuffing?

Stuffing is a mixture consisting of bread and broth served as a side dish or used to fill a cavity. You can bake it in a casserole or stuff a turkey, either way, it pairs wonderfully with a slice of turkey.

Maple Sausage Stuffing Ingredients

  • French Baguettes, cubed
  • Maple Breakfast Sausage
  • Onion
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Yellow Pepper
  • Celery
  • Garlic
  • Egg
  • Chicken Broth
  • Sage
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper

How to Make Maple Sausage Stuffing

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cut the baguettes into cubes. Lightly grease a baking sheet and then place the bread on the sheet and bake for 12 minutes.

While the bread bakes, warm up some olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and brown the maple sausage.

Once the maple breakfast sausage is completely browned, remove the sausage from the pan but keep the drippings in the pan.

Add the peppers, onions, celery, and season with 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, and 1 tsp sage. Cook for 3 minutes or until nice and tender then stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

Toss the baked bread cubes in a large bowl. Pour in the chicken broth and let it sit for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, add in the egg, sausage, remaining seasonings, and vegetable mixture. Mix until everything is well combined and pour into a well-greased 9×13 casserole dish. Bake uncovered for 50-55 minutes.

Without a doubt, the best stuffing you’ll ever have!

How to Freeze Stuffing

Place the stuffing in an airtight container, preferably in small portions. This should last several months. To reheat the stuffing, let it thaw at room temperature and then place it in a 350-degree oven and bake for 15 minutes covered or until warm.

Recipe Tips and Variations:

  • Not a fan of French Baguette? Use any other type of bread you’d like. You may even use cornbread for this recipe.
  • To save time, purchase the already cubed store-bought bread in a bag at your local supermarket.
  • The maple breakfast sausage is the star of this dish, although if you’d like to omit the sausage feel free to add bacon, ground turkey, or ground chicken.
