INGREDIENTS FOR HAWAIIAN ROLL FRENCH TOAST

See the recipe card below for ingredient quantities and complete instructions.

  • Hawaiian Rolls – Butter or sweet Hawaiian rolls work perfectly for this recipe.
  • Heavy Cream – Feel free to substitute with whole milk or half and half.
  • Eggs – Do not omit! You’ll need it for the custard.
  • Cinnamon – It isn’t French toast without ground cinnamon. Feel free to also add a pinch of nutmeg if you wish. Also, if you don’t have ground cinnamon, you can use pumpkin spice.
  • Sugar – Optional.
  • Salt – Helps to balance all of the flavors.
  • Vanilla Extract – Adds great flavor!
  • Butter – Unsalted or salted works.

HOW TO MAKE STEP-BY-STEP

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, eggs, cinnamon, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract.
  2. Melt some butter in a skillet over medium heat. Once the butter melts, place the Hawaiian rolls in the egg mixture and coat it on all sides.
  3. Place the rolls in the skillet and cook for about 1 minute on each side or until crispy.
  4. Remove them from the skillet and serve immediately with maple syrup.

TOP TIPS

  • Use day-old Hawaiian rolls. Avoid fresh bread when making French toast otherwise the bread will soak up too much of the custard and turn out soggy.
  • Serve with maple syrup, butter, and fruit, for best results.
  • Feel free to serve with powdered sugar or whipped cream if you like it extra sweet.
  • Don’t have Hawaiian rolls on hand? Use regular sliced bread or whatever bread you have on hand. The custard is super creamy and delicious and will work on any type of bread.

STORAGE

I highly recommend enjoying these immediately but if you have any leftovers, place them in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
